Under Pressure: Caring for a Team

Ask an Expert

Today, we dig into something a little different than our normal design brainstorms and ask: Are you OK?

A wise band once said "love dares you to change our ways of caring about ourselves." Last month when we interviewed Rick Erwin, GM of City Museum, his honesty about the struggles he's faced both personally and professionally struck a chord. Today we will be focusing a bit on the challenges your teams are facing and what we can do to support them.

We've enlisted the help of Dr. Heather Walker, Organizational Psychologist, to speak on promoting self-care with your staff. It goes without saying that this current situation is hard for everyone, but that doesn't mean we need to stop talking about the obvious. Reach out. The strength of this industry has always been its people.

These are the days it never rains but it pours. (Eeh-doo-bah-dah.)

Dr. Heather Walker discusses the emotional weight your team members might be carrying and how to support them with empathy and a bit of levity. Dr. Walker drops this advice for team leaders: "They need to listen really hard right now, because staff are scared, staff are questioning, and they have their own concerns right now. And if you aren't listening, you aren't able to come up with solutions."
